How does it work?

On August 20, 2022, the quarterfinals will be played, and then on the following day, the semi-finals, the match for third place, and the match for the gold medal will all take place.

Top Teams Preview

Austria

It’s worth noting that the team’s record has improved since December, when it was defeated 11-2 by Canada. The Austrian squad is missing two major NHL prospects, Vinzenz Rohrer and Marco Kasper. To move in the rankings, Austria must be a leader in network management.

Canada

Despite off-ice worries, the host country has a strong chance of recovering the championship that Canada won in the Czech Republic in 2020.

If Canada’s goaltenders maintain their current form, they might pose a championship danger.

Czechia

Since 2005, it has only reached the semifinals once, winning a bronze medal (in 2018). If the Czechs want to change the narrative, David Jiricek and Stanislav Svozil must excel.

Thirteen Czech juniors who play for Canadian clubs are accustomed to playing on North American ice.

Finland

They seek to make it six in a row after not winning a title since 2019. Antti Pennanen’s squad, who won bronze in 2021, will pay the price. Brad Lambert and Joakim Kemell are two of the competition’s most likely scorers.

Germany

Since 2021, Germany’s offensive strategy has evolved. Tim Stutzle, Florian Elias, and JJ Peterka are all first-round choices in 2021, but head coach Tobias Abstreiter is unable to keep them on the ice.

Germany must rely on its goalkeepers and their dedication. They finished sixth with a tiny squad last year, so it may be difficult for them to repeat.

Latvia

When the IIHF imposes age limitations, the little Baltic country will struggle. The Latvians come here because Russia is not permitted to compete on a global scale. Their first two World Juniors games were against Finland and Canada.

Slovakia

Hockey in Slovakia is improving. People gained confidence after Juraj Slafkovsky and Simon Nemec were chosen first and second overall and won the bronze medal in the 2022 Olympics.
Sweden

As the Swedes prepare for this competition, they have the majority of the tools they need (1981, 2012). Sweden’s head coach has been Tomas Monten since 2017. This will be his final U20 game. Simon Edvinsson is a massive defender, while Jesper Wallstedt is a world-class goalie.

Sweden’s pursuit for the gold medal at the U18 World Championships in 2022 began in Germany with Liam Ohgren and Jonathan Lekkerimaki.

Switzerland

In 2013, and 2018, the Swiss men earned one bronze medal at the World Juniors and two silver medals at the World Championships. (1998). If coach Marco Bayer’s club stops its losing skid in Edmonton, it will be a Cinderella story for the ages.

Swiss people are superficial. It should be incredible regardless of who takes the opening shot.
Switzerland lacks goal scorers up front, therefore they don’t have many opportunities to advance.

United States

Nate Leaman’s team this year is not as excellent as last year’s. His three goalies that can be picked in 2023 lack Spencer Knight’s experience. Brock Faber and Luke Hughes, two Olympic hopefuls for 2022, command a deep, mobile, and offensively gifted defense team. At forward, first-round choices Logan Cooley, who is adept with the puck, and Matt Coronato, who is a solid shot, will be interesting to watch.

USA Hockey will be disappointed if they do not qualify for the gold-medal game.
