In the IIHF World Junior Championship, commonly known as the U20 Men’s Championship, the top two groups are followed by Divisions 1 through 3, in that order. Only one team from each of the two divisions, Division 1 and Division 2, is promoted to the next level. The winner of the gold medal advances directly to Division 2 with just one group of competitors.
The two clubs with the worst records in Group B’s Division 1 and Division 2 will be moved down to Divisions 2 and 3, respectively, reflecting their overall performance. The clubs who finished in worst position in both Divisions 1 and 2 of Group A will be sent to Group B.
The losing team in the series between the two groups that finished in last place in the Premier Division (A and B) will be relegated at the conclusion of the competition (with the series a best 2-out-of-3).
The Quarterfinals
In a playoff game, the team that finished in fourth place in one group competes against the team that finished first in the other group. The team that finished third in one group competes against the team that finished second in the other group.
The winner of the game between the two teams that advanced from the quarterfinals will play the other to see who advances to the finals and who is eliminated.
The top fifty percent of competitors will each get a medal for their efforts (the losers awarded silver). Teams who end up in last place will be awarded bronze medals.
Eligible players
The players are eligible to compete in the global juniors competition if you are a male between the ages of 15 and 20 and younger than 15, and your eligibility is determined by the country for which you would want to play.
If they want to compete for Great Britain on the international junior stage, British citizens who were born in England, Wales, or Scotland are required to make this choice.
They do not have any other choices. Although it is common practice for teams to represent each of the four countries that comprise the United Kingdom at international soccer competitions other than the Olympics and the Paralympics, the United Kingdom is not sending a team to this particular competition because it does not qualify for those competitions (usually not all of them qualifying for the same tournaments in the same years).
A Change
In most contests, the United States and Canada are considered the favorites. Group A consists of Canada, Czechia, Finland, Latvia, and Slovakia. Group B consists of the United States, Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, and Austria.
On August 20, the top four teams from each group will progress to the next round. The finals and matches for gold, silver, and bronze medals are held on August 21.
